The 2020 elections are currently on the minds of every Democrat who sees themselves defeating President Trump.
The Democratic primary is currently turning into a massive pileup as Democrats fall over themselves to run for President.
But one number just guaranteed the Democrats’ massive defeat in 2020.
24 is the magic number which will doom Democrats in 2020.
That’s the number of days the federal government has been shut down.
While 24 days may not seem like much, both President Trump and House Democrats predict that the government could be shut down for several more weeks or even months.
The previous record of 21 days during the 1995-1996 shutdown was surpassed late last week.
The record-breaking shutdown is sure to bring about political pain for Democrats throughout 2019 and even 2020.
After refusing to compromise with President Trump on any aspect related to border security, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer allowed the federal government to shut down, all so they can keep the border wall between Mexico and the United States from being built.
Since then, Pelosi has taken power as Speaker of the House and has shown no intentions of wanting to negotiate with President Trump on any aspect of building the wall or securing the border.
For his part, President Trump has shown no signs of backing down either.
He has refused to cave in to Democratic demands to reopen the federal government without getting the wall he campaigned on in 2016.
And the pain is starting to show itself for Democrats.
For one thing, the vast majority of federal workers affected by the shutdown lean Democrat.
But they are furious with no paychecks coming in and with little hope that the budget crisis will solve itself anytime soon.
What’s more, Democrats are going to have a harder time motivating their base to oppose the wall than Trump will have motivating his base to support one.
To make things worse for Democrats, the shutdown’s historic length is starting to result in them getting the blame.
When the government first shut down, opinion polls showed that Americans blamed Trump.
Americans are beginning to blame Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer as they continue to dig their heels in, with no end to the shutdown in sight.
It’s only a matter of time before either the Democrats break, or Trump pushes his border wall through with or without Congressional approval.
The President has the ability to declare a national emergency and direct the military to begin construction on the border wall.
And should Democrats continue to refuse negotiations, it is likely he will do just that.
