No American was prepared for this.
The coronavirus penetrated the White House bubble.
And all hell broke loose when Trump got the result of this coronavirus test.
On Thursday, word leaked out that top Trump aide Hope Hicks – who was the President’s first hire on his 2016 campaign – tested positive for the coronavirus.
Hicks had been with the President on Tuesday when Trump flew to Cleveland for the debate. The President’s campaign staff, senior staff and adult children were all on that flight.
To be in the debate hall, everyone had to receive a negative coronavirus test administered by the Cleveland Clinic.
On Wednesday, Hicks again flew with the President and tested negative.
But later that day Hicks began feeling ill and received a positive test.
“Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!” President Trump tweeted a little before 11pm on Thursday night.
The President then tweeted a little over an hour later revealing that both he and First Lady Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus.
“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” President Trump wrote on Twitter.
The White House physician U.S. Navy Commander Sean Conley wrote that the President would carry out his duties while under quarantine.
“Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments,” Conley wrote.
First Lady Melania Trump informed the public that she and the President were going into quarantine and that she felt fine.
“As too many Americans have done this year, @potus & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19. We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together.”
Even Trump’s opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, expressed his wishes of support for the President.
“Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family,”
Biden wrote on social media.
On Thursday morning, chief of staff Mark Meadows said the President was experiencing light symptoms but would continue to work from the White House residence.
The diagnosis throws the Trump family, the nation and the presidential campaign into a state of uncertainty.
