biden-faceEver since the passing of Supreme Court Justice Anton Scalia, Democrat leaders in Washington D.C. have been advocating Obama do something to take care of  the now vacant seat Scalia once held.

Republicans have argued vociferously they would resist any nomination made by the President, while Democrats say it is the responsibility of the President to make an appointment for the vacancy ASAP.

Even Vice President Joe Biden has made it clear he thinks the President ought to act quickly to place a new justice on the bench.

This is quite ironic as video from 1992 seems to negate Biden’s current stance.

In it he stands on the floor of the Senate and urges George Bush to hold off on nominating a new justice as the tumult of the election year would make it to difficult to accept.

Biden says:

“It is my view that if a Supreme Court justice resigns tomorrow or within the next several weeks, or resigns at the end of the summer, President Bush should consider following the practice of a majority of his predecessors and not, and not, name a nominee until after the November election is completed,…The Senate, too, Mr. President, must consider how it would respond to a Supreme Court vacancy that would occur in the full throes of an election year.”

Biden went on to say that the Senate Judiciary Committee should seriously consider not scheduling confirmation hearings.

“Instead, it would be our pragmatic conclusion that once the political season is underway, and it is, action on a Supreme Court nomination must be put off until after the election campaign is over,” Biden said. “That is what is fair to the nominee and essential to the process. Otherwise, it seems to me we will be in deep trouble as an institution.”

Where would we be without such duplicity in politics?

Of course a video of a Democrat Senator changing their mind shouldn’t take us by surprise. It is however, incredibly outrageous to consider just how insulting this is.

While they say one thing they do another.

Should Obama (with Biden’s full support) initiate an appointment for justice it would prove the President and his closest allies don’t really support the way things ought to be.

Some have gone so far as to insinuate Scalia’s death might not have been from natural causes, but looked much like a murder and might have been carried out by the Obama administration in an attempt to secure the seat for a liberal appointee.

While this is obviously speculation only, when you look at how Obama’s chomping at the bit right now, you can rest assured he definitely isn’t disappointed Scalia’s dead.

Neither is Joe Biden apparently.
