Donald Trump’s re-election campaign promises to be one of the most hard-fought and brutal races in American history.
The President and many of his supporters believe that because of the strong economy and weakness of the Democrat field, Trump is strongly positioned to win a second term.
But Rush Limbaugh warned Trump will lose in 2020 for this one reason.
Donald Trump reacted to the shootings in El Paso and Dayton by calling for stronger background checks.
The President also tweeted that there was strong support for new gun control and that Trump would be open to new restrictions on firearms.
“Serious discussions are taking place between House and Senate leadership on meaningful Background Checks. I have also been speaking to the NRA, and others, so that their very strong views can be fully represented and respected. Guns should not be placed in the hands of mentally ill or deranged people. I am the biggest Second Amendment person there is, but we all must work together for the good and safety of our Country. Common sense things can be done that are good for everyone!” the President wrote.
These tweets alarmed Second Amendment supporters – millions of whom flocked to the polls in 2016 to support Donald Trump because Trump promised to oppose gun control.
During a recent radio show Rush Limbaugh offered a warning to the President – if you support gun control you will betray your base like George H.W. Bush did when he broke his “read my lips: no new taxes pledge.”
Bush’s broken promise led to his defeat in 1992 and Limbaugh contends President Trump could be headed for a similar fate if he signs new gun control into law.
“Like they’re talking about gun control. Don’t give them a thing! It’s not gonna buy us anything! You know, Trump risks something here. We got sound bites of his little presser today, and we’ve learned to ignore what Trump says to the media and instead wait for the action that follows or yet another statement. But Trump is making it appear that he’s got some negotiating room with the left on gun control things,” Limbaugh began.
“I know this. I know that there are people in the West Wing, in the Trump administration, urging him to do it, swamp-dwelling Republicans. Just like there were people in the George H. W. Bush West Wing, ‘You’ve gotta compromise on that tax cut promise you made. You gotta do it! You gotta raise taxes, you gotta give the left something.’ George H. W. Bush who had said ‘Read my lips: No new taxes’ raised taxes. And any kind of a deal with the Democrats on guns is going to risk the same fate happening to Trump,” Limbaugh concluded.
Limbaugh knows that gun owners vote on the single issue of the Second Amendment.
If President Trump supports a new gun registration database then some percentage of gun owners will stay at home in protest during the 2020 election.
And given the narrow margins of victory in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin – the pro-gun rustbelt states that provided Trump his Electoral College margin of victory – any decrease in support from gun owners could prove fatal to Trump’s re-election campaign.
That’s why millions of Trump supporters hope the President uses the Congressional recess to allow the emotion from the tragedies to subside and realize he needs to stand with his base on the Second Amendment if he hopes to win re-election.
