The environment for the 2018 midterm elections is beginning to take shape.
Democrats have spent the last 18 months dreaming of a blue wave that will sweep Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer into power.
But this new poll has Schumer and Pelosi in a panic.
Democrats have been relying on the anti-Trump media manufacturing one fake crisis after another in order to drive down President Trump’s approval numbers.
Since elections are battles of base mobilization, a depressed GOP base would lead to a Democrat route in November.
But despite the fake news media’s nonstop negative coverage of events like the so-called “family separation” crisis at the border, the NATO summit, and the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a brand new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds President Trump’s approval ratings increasing.
President Trump’s approval rating went up to 45 percent because Republican support for Trump is hardening in the wake of the media’s attempts to paint him as a traitor and an agent of the Russian government.
The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found 88 percent of Republicans approved of President Trump.
That is the highest approval rating for a President from members of their own party since President George W. Bush in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
And in more bad news for Democrats, their lead on the generic ballot question of which party voters would like to see in control of Congress slipped to just six points.
In the June NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Democrats held a commanding 10 point advantage.
That margin has slipped because 56 percent of Americans now see Democrats out of touch with mainstream Americans.
And finally – in what may be the worst news for Democrats – 50 percent of Americans approved of Trump’s handling of the economy.
Jobs and the economy are usually the number one issue for voters, and Trump’s strong marks on the booming economy suggest Democrats will have a tougher fight than many in the media predicted in order to win back Congress.
Democrats holding just a six point advantage in the generic ballot, along with voters handing Trump strong grades for his economic policies, means the battle for Congress is a jump ball.
When Democrats held double-digit leads in the generic ballot, the media excitedly reported that a blue wave was set to sweep across America.
Journalists claimed the GOP was finished.
But the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll shows the media’s plan is failing to gain traction with the American people.
In fact, the anti-Trump media’s nonstop attacks on the President are backfiring, and instead of depressing GOP support, are actually driving up Trump’s numbers.
Democrat pollster Fred Yang, who conducts the NBC/Wall Street Journal survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff, declared, “The more Trump gets criticized by the media, the more his base seems to rally behind him.”
Historically, the party out of power gains seats in the midterm elections.
But this new poll shows that a blue wave is far from a certainty.
And that has Democrats panicking.
