Nancy Pelosi is in big trouble.
The incoming Speaker of the House picked a fight with Donald Trump that she thought was a sure-fire winner.
But then Pelosi issued this threat to President Trump that instantly blew up in her face.
President Trump is trying to give the Democrats a face-saving way out of the corner they’ve backed themselves into.
Pelosi and Chuck Schumer shut down the government rather than provide the votes to fund Trump’s border wall.
But Trump and the Republicans hold all the cards since the government workers who were sent home are mainly Democrats.
So Trump said he was willing to let the Democrats call the wall whatever they needed to in order to sell it to the voters.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Christmas that Democrats could call it “a wall, a fence, whatever they want to call it.”
But instead of accepting Trump’s olive branch, Nancy Pelosi smacked the offer away.
Pelosi sneered at Trump and mocked his gesture.
“First of all, the fact … that he says, ‘We’re going to build a wall with cement, and Mexico’s going to pay for it’ while he’s already backed off of the cement – now he’s down to, I think, a beaded curtain or something, I’m not sure where he is,” Pelosi said in an exclusive interview with USA Today.
Then she issued a threat that she figured would force Republicans to cave.
“But one thing’s for sure, the first week of January, we will be passing legislation to open up government,” Pelosi also told USA Today.
However, one of President Trump’s closest allies in Congress made it clear Trump is in this fight for the long haul.
North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows – who chairs the House Freedom Caucus – told CNN that Trump is not budging on his demand that Congress fund a border wall.
“I can tell you the president is very firm in his resolve that we need to secure our border,” Meadows stated.
Meadows went on to explain Trump’s resolve to secure funding for the wall.
“I can tell you, his resolve is very firm. He believes that his negotiating team has made, you know, several offers that would result in a compromise but still money for border security and yet, at the same time, it hasn’t been received by Democrat colleagues in a manner that would suggest they’re taking his resolve seriously. I can tell you, if they believe this president is going to yield on this particular issue, they’re misreading him, misreading the American people because he’s intent on making sure that not only he follows through with this commitment to the American people, but that he makes sure that our borders are secure, there’s less drugs, less terrorists, human trafficking, drug trafficking that takes place,” the North Carolina Republican added.
Democrats are used to Republicans folding their cards at the first hint of the media blaming them for a government shutdown.
But this fight is different because Trump knows it’s the reason why he was elected—and he’s in it to win it.
