Liberal politicians and media figures have been hyping up Robert Mueller’s investigation for years.
The hope among the left is for Mueller to release a report rebuking the President and leading to his removal from office.
But Mueller just confessed to one defeat that has transformed Trump’s life forever.
Robert Mueller has spent the better part of two years working to investigate Russian collusion into the 2016 presidential election.
And the Special Counsel has made some strong friends and allies along the way.
From Hollywood to Washington, influential figures on the left have cheered Mueller along as he continued to dig into the 2016 race.
Many on the political left have hailed Mueller as their savior, who will deliver them, and the rest of the country, from Trump’s presidency.
The dream among the left is that Mueller is instead investigating whether or not President Trump himself broke federal laws in order to win the election.
Even more, many on the left hope that Mueller will implicate Trump in directly colluding with the Russian government to rig the 2016 election and steal it from Hillary Clinton.
But Mueller may leave the left feeling empty when it’s all said and done.
“A public narrative has built an expectation that the special counsel will explain his conclusions, but I think that expectation may be seriously misplaced,” said John Pistole, Mueller’s longtime top deputy at the FBI. “That’s not what the rules provide, and I really don’t see him straying from the mission. That’s not who he is.”
USA Today reports, “The Justice Department’s special counsel rules don’t call for Mueller to make any public statements about his work, let alone deliver a report of what he has found.”
“Instead, his confidential report must explain why he filed the charges he did and why he might have declined to bring charges against others. It would be up to the attorney general to decide whether that becomes public.”
This of course leaves open the possibility that Mueller will instead leave his report buried in the red tape and bureaucracy of Washington D.C., without the public ever laying eyes on it.
If that happens, the dream of Democrats across the country, who see in Mueller a chance to undo the 2016 election, could be shattered.
Mueller has already hinted that he may not reveal anything to the public.
The current rules at the Justice Department require that Mueller only has to notify Congress about the report, and some of the facts in his investigation could be required to remain secret.
This could lead to several legal battles as Congressional Democrats will likely work to force his report to go public.
It may still never happen though.
“He’s a federal prosecutor; they don’t write public reports,” said George Washington University law professor Randall Eliason, a former federal prosecutor. “Everybody is breathlessly waiting for the Mueller report, and I’m not sure that one is even coming.”
