After months of speculation, Joe Biden made it official this past week.

The former Vice President and perpetual political gaffe machine is now running for president in 2020.

But Biden kicked his new campaign off on the wrong foot after he torpedoed his own chances of winning the election thanks to one comment.

Joe Biden, who had previously sought the presidency in the 1980s and in 2008, is running for president for the third time.

The former Vice President under Barack Obama made it official last month when he announced that he would run in the 2020 Democratic primary process for the nomination.

The winner of that fight, which so far involves over 20 other candidates, will go on to face off against Donald Trump in the general election.

After throwing his hat into the ring, Biden immediately became a top tier candidate, and a favorite for the nomination according to some political analysts.

But Biden’s announcement was also met with a major mistake on his part.

Despite leading the Democratic field, Biden may have made a critical error when he came out in favor of impeaching President Trump.

The Daily Caller reports, “Former vice president and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said congressional Democrats may have no choice but to impeach President Donald Trump if he interferes in ongoing investigations.”

“If, in fact, [those in the Trump administration] block the investigation, they have no alternative but to go to the only other constitutional resort they have, [which] is impeachment,” Biden said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Tuesday.

Impeachment is deeply unpopular right now.

And since the Mueller report revealed there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government in the 2016 election, the prospect of Democrats impeaching the President seems even more remote now than ever before.

Polls routinely show that the American people reject impeachment, and would believe any move to do so would simply be a Democratic power grab.

Even many Democrats such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi have backed away from the prospect of impeachment, realizing that there is a huge risk of there being a major public backlash against the Democratic Party if they push forward with the idea.

But Biden isn’t backing down on pushing for impeachment.

“If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. And I cannot stand by and watch that happen,” Biden said last week.

If Biden continues to call for impeachment, it may ultimately hurt his standing in polling between him and President Trump in a general election matchup, and it may even hurt him in the Democratic Party as more and more Democrats are realizing impeachment is politically toxic.

“Biden officially launched his campaign last week after months of speculation. The former vice president is widely considered to be the front-runner for the Democratic name recognition largely due to his name recognition and connection to President Barack Obama, who remains popular in the Democratic party,” concludes the Daily Caller.
