Donald Trump stopped Chuck Schumer dead in his tracks.
The New York Democrat expected the President to abandon demands to fund his border wall.
But instead, Trump destroyed Chuck Schumer’s career with one sentence.
President Trump used the State of the Union to make his case for the “Make America Great Again” immigration agenda.
Trump’s proposal to build a border wall rests at the heart of his promise to put ‘America First’.
But Democrats – led by Chuck Schumer – refused to provide any votes for wall funding.
This led to a 35-day government shutdown that began in December and ended when President Trump agreed to give Congress three weeks to come up with a border security deal that included funding for a new physical barrier.
President Trump’s State of the Union fell smack dab in the middle of those negotiations.
And the President used the primetime address – which saw ratings increase on all four main broadcast networks by 10 percent in comparison to 2018’s address – to call out Democrats and their wealthy celebrity backers who live in gated communities, but refuse to afford Americans that same protection along the Southern border.
“I want people to come into our country in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally. Tonight, I’m asking you to defend our very dangerous southern border out of love and devotion to our fellow citizens and our country. No issue better illustrates the divide between America’s working-class and America’s political class than illegal immigration. Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders, while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards,” the President declared.
The speech was just the beginning of Trump’s push to secure new wall funding.
On Monday, Trump will hold his first “Make America Great Again” rally of 2019 in El Paso, Texas.
El Paso is central to the border wall debate.
The government built fencing along the section of the Texas border that El Paso shares with Mexico.
The fence succeeded in keeping out dangerous illegal immigrants from entering El Paso.
A fence makes sense for El Paso.
El Paso borders Juarez, Mexico, which is one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
Without a fence, dangerous drug dealers, gang members and vicious criminals could have terrorized the population of El Paso by illegally entering the United States.
“The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime — one of the highest in the country, and considered one of our nation’s most dangerous cities. Now, immediately upon its building, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities. Simply put, walls work and walls save lives,” the President explained in his speech.
Americans know the Democrats opposition to new border construction is not rooted in any principled disagreements with Trump.
Democrats only oppose new fencing because they think defeating Trump on the issue will doom his 2020 re-election chances.
But snap polls after the State of the Union found that Americans overwhelmingly approved of Trump’s speech.
And over 70 percent approved of Trump’s immigration proposals.
Now Trump will carry that momentum into rallies designed to pressure the Democrats into acknowledging the reality that America needs a barrier along the Southern border.
