The current federal government shutdown has already broken the record for the longest shut down in American history.

With neither side appearing to back down, there’s no end in sight.

And Democrats are on the verge of losing everything if Trump follows through with this one threat.

President Trump has been hinting at declaring a national emergency and directing the military to build a wall along the Southern border.

Doing so would cut the Democrats entirely out of the picture.

National emergencies do not require Congressional approval, so as Commander-in-Chief, Trump could direct military resources to construct the wall without Congressional support.

Both Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer would lose all negotiating powers should Trump take this course of action.

President Trump has also found unlikely allies in his quest to build a wall by using this executive power.

The Daily Caller reports, “Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said it is time for President Donald Trump to use emergency powers to build a wall or barrier on the southern border Thursday evening.”

Graham’s support mirrors similar support Congressional Republicans have given in recent days as Democrats continue to dig their heels in and refuse any talk of compromise to end the shutdown and build the wall.

However, Democrats would no doubt challenge the President’s authority to use his executive powers to construct the wall. This would shift the battle from the halls of Congress to the American judicial system, where the legal ramifications and numerous lawsuits could take years to be settled.

But Trump continues to hold this option in his back pocket.

If Democrats continue to obstruct and hold the government hostage over border security, it’s likely that there will be more calls on President Trump to declare a national emergency.

And Graham’s recent support suggests the pressure is growing by the day.

“It is time for President Trump to use emergency powers to fund the construction of a border wall,” the South Carolina Senator said in a statement. “Speaker Pelosi’s refusal to negotiate on funding for a border wall/barrier…virtually ends the congressional path to funding for a border wall/barrier.”

Pelosi would almost certainly live to regret it if Trump breaks out his executive orders and directs the military to build the wall without her input.
