Chuck Schumer held the press conference no one ever thought they would see.

The Democrat majority leader stepped up in front of the cameras and addressed Trump’s demand to build a border wall to stop the migrant caravan.

By the time he had finished, all hell had broken loose.

Chuck Schumer Leaves the Door Open for More Border Wall Funding

Reporters asked Schumer about Donald Trump’s demands for at least five billion more dollars to fund the border wall.

Schumer claimed Democrats and Republicans had a deal on $1.6 billion in border security funding.

He stated that was their position.

“We are for strong border security,” Schumer stated, “The $1.6 billion for border security negotiated by Democrats and Republicans is our position. We believe that is the right way to go …  Stick to the $1.6 billion … We’re not negotiating in the press. This is our position.”

But Congress explicitly stated that none of that money could be used to build a new wall.

Trump could only use the money to repair existing fencing.

However, reporters took note that his answer did not rule out a deal on more border wall funding.

Trump has spent weeks calling for wall funding.

He pointed out that the crisis on the border with thousands of migrants attempting to flood into America proved Congress’s need to fund the wall.

Donald Trump Renews Calls for the Wall

The President noted that the caravan was filled with dangerous criminals and allowing the migrants to cross into America illegally threatened the nation’s sovereignty.

Trump tweeted:

Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries. Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!

Trump also discussed the wall with two reporters from the Washington Post in an exclusive interview.

Last fall, Democrats thought they had a deal to provide $25 billion in border security funding in exchange for amnesty for the three million so-called “DREAMers.”

The two sides thought they had an agreement after Trump ended Obama’s illegal DACA executive amnesty agreement.

How a New Wall Funding Deal Could Take Shape

Trump backed away from the deal when it was clear the Democrats never intended to fund the wall.

That’s because open-borders activists tied up the fate of DACA in the Supreme Court.

Trump said the Supreme Court will decide what happens with DACA.

He told the Post:

We almost had a deal, except when — I mean, actually, it wasn’t their fault, wasn’t our fault, it was on DACA. We almost had a deal, and then the judge ruled shockingly in favor of Obama’s signature, when even Obama said what he’s doing is not legal. Essentially, he said, it’s not going to hold up. But when the judge ruled, all of a sudden it was like, that’s the end of that deal. But we were very close to having a deal — $25 billion for a wall and various other things on the border. And DACA. And when the judge shockingly — you know, the Democrats never thought they were going to win that, and then you had another couple of judges rule, and then you had judges rule the other way. It’s going to be settled, I assume, in the Supreme Court. But we were close to having a deal on DACA until that ruling.

The Supreme Court should give Trump a favorable ruling on his authority to end DACA.

His argument is cut and dried.

Trump has authority to undo what previous Presidents used executive authority to do.

That will leave Democrats in a bind.

Even though they run the house, they will want to protect the DACA recipients.

That could allow Trump to reach a deal for border wall funding in exchange for protecting the 700,000 or so “DREAMers” who received DACA.
