Donald Trump had a busy weekend. On Friday, he was sworn in as Commander in Chief. In case you missed it, it was a short 15-minute speech, where he mentioned himself 3 times. Guess who the star was? America.
That’s in direct contrast to a November speech of Obama’s when he campaigned for Hillary and had an 84-minute speech and mentioned himself every other breath.
Over the course of the weekend, Trump got to work. His Secretary of Defense initiated 31 drone strikes against ISIS and Trump pulled out the executive order pen and started shredding Trans-Pacific Partnership.
TPP, as its known, was a crown jewel of Obama’s, but horrible for the USA .
The TPP was President Obama’s signature trade deal and the one he had hoped to push through Congress before leaving office. Withdrawing from it would unravel years of work and inject fresh uncertainty into global relations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific.
Trump is also expected to sign an executive order on his plans to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“We will be starting negotiations having to do with NAFTA,” Trump said Sunday at a swearing-in ceremony for his top White House advisers.
President Trump decided to negotiate trade deals with countries individually. When Trump campaigned to make deals in America’s best interests. It didn’t take more than 48 hours for him to keep his word once he was sworn in.
Trade deals like TPP end up siphoning money and jobs away from Americans. And NAFTA basically makes America a super highway between Canada and Mexico. It also makes it harder to enforce our borders.
Trump said NAFTA was a joke. Securing our borders and getting Mexico to pay their fair share so trade is equal for both parties is next on Trump’s list.
That’s not all. As these trade agreements slowly get dismantled, Trump also put some of our allies on notice. They’ve been riding the coat tails of America for too long in deals like NATO. We’ve foot the bill for too long, in order for many countries to feel like special snowflakes. But that’s about to change. Ever since NATO was formed, back in the 40’s, those “special alliances have only worked in our favor once, after 9/11. But we’ve paid towards global protection for others for years. Trump said he’s going to change that and get us out of alliances that cost us treasure but supply us nothing.
And it’s only Monday! Donald Trump might get more accomplished in four years than Obama did in eight. But let’s be honest. Obama really became the President so he can get the title of “Most Avid Golfer in White House History”.
