Kim Jong Un recently went for a hike up Mount Paektu – and this trip is causing fear and controversy across the United States. That’s because those close to him believe this signifies that the infamous leader of North Korea is contemplating a significant decision he is about to make.

According to KCNA Mount Paektu, according to legend, is the birthplace of the Korean nation. It is also the location that the North Korean government has been using to legalize the Kim family’s reign.

According to United Press International:

The report said in English that the hike had prompted Kim to recall “emotion-charged days when he realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force without yielding even a moment.”

Numerous observers expect that Kim’s visit to Mount Paektu, which supposedly is a very rare event, is the precedent to a colossal decision. They note that the North Korean leader made the same trip just before making the choice to execute his uncle Jang Sung Taek.

As United Press International: states:

“It’s unlikely that Kim went up the so-called sacred mountain for fresh air. He is likely to have considered how he will formulate external policies after having declared the regime a nuclear state,” a Seoul-based source told Dong-A Ilbo.

Some have suggested the regime may shift its external policy to seek dialogue with the United States, after declaring itself a nuclear state with its Hwasong-15 ICBM launch on Nov. 29.

“Resorting to further provocations could be difficult for North Korea since further nuclear tests at the Punggyeri site have become impossible due to safety concerns and there is growing talk in the U.S. Congress of a pre-emptive strike,” a former diplomat told Chosun Ilbo.

However, this is not the only possible reasoning for Kim Jong Un’s trek up the Mount. For instance, certain analysts conclude that the leader’s journey may be a celebratory one, following the of the Hwasong-15 missile. They note that the supreme leader also went to a symbolic palace following the successful launch of the Hwasong-14 on the 4th of July.

Experts speculate that any major conclusions Kim Jong Un comes to will be in his New Year’s speech in January 2018.
