When National Guard Soldier Billy Welch went to a Waffle House over the weekend,  he couldn’t have imagined the turn of events that would soon unfold.

Welch, dressed in his full military uniform with his gun holstered to his side, placed his order hoping to enjoy a hot breakfast.

After placing his order, he noticed the waitress and manager signaling for him to come over.

On Lex18 the young Soldier Billy Welch was quoted as saying:

I got up and I walked over to them, asked them how they were doing and stuff, and they said I’d have to take my firearm outside,” said Welch. “I don’t feel comfortable taking my firearm away from me. I always keep it with me and they said, ‘it’s one of our policies.’”

With all the recent shootings of unarmed civilians, who could blame Welch for wanting to carry a firearm for self-protection.

After all, the right to keep and bear arms is a God given right.

In this statement Welch decided he wasn’t willing to part with his gun, ad politely opted to take his business elsewhere

“You know, if I can’t have my firearm, then I can’t be here. I walked inside to the other waitress. I said, ‘thank you, but no thank you ma’am. I’m gonna have to leave.’”

The story went viral on Facebook, and organizations all around the country were contacted Welch to show their support and solidarity.

Micalea Shaw, who was a witness to the entire situation at the Kentucky Waffle House just couldn’t stay silent:

“I have a bunch of family members and friends who have been active military and in the military and retired and it hurts my feelings when people disrespect them,” said Micaela Shaw. “I just wanted to stand up for him.”

The owner of the Waffle House took notice of the media frenzy and finally issued a public statement:

For many years we have had a “No Firearms” police in place in our restaurants. We continue to believe this is the best policy for the safety of our customers and associates.”

Waffle House’s anti-gun policy isn’t only foolish, it’s dangerous.

Instead of allowing its patrons to defend themselves by carrying a firearm, they’ve opted to disarm law-abiding citizens, even a National Guard soldier who bravely defends the liberty and freedom of Americans.
