For decades, America has protected Cubans fleeing the Communist Castro dictatorship.
It was a pillar of America’s fight for liberty against Communism.
Barack Obama reversed that with one dangerous move.
Since 1980, America has had a “wet foot, dry foot” policy with regards to Cuban refugees.
That meant if brave Cubans who fled the Castro dictatorship reached America, they would be granted asylum.
That is no more, thanks to Barack Obama.
He announced Cubans fleeing Communist Cuba to reach America will be returned to Castro’s government.
“Effective immediately, Cuban nationals who attempt to enter the United States illegally and do not qualify for humanitarian relief will be subject to removal, consistent with U.S. law and enforcement priorities,” Obama said in a statement. “By taking this step, we are treating Cuban migrants the same way we treat migrants from other countries.”
The Cuban government, Obama said, has agreed to take back Cubans who are deported from the United States. The move, first reported by the Associated Press just eight days before he leaves office, caught the foreign policy establishment off-guard. It’s perhaps the most high-profile step toward normalizing relations with the Communist island since Obama began his détente with the Castro regime in December 2014.
Critics blasted Obama’s decision.
Writing in The Resurgent, Erick Erickson ripped Obama as a moral coward because Cubans who escape but are returned often face torture chambers and execution squads:
“Barack Obama is reversing a long-standing American policy to allow Cuban refugees into our country if they make it to our country. The Communist butchers of Cuba have long wanted this policy revoked. It is well known that many of the people who are sent back to Cuba are tortured, abused, and killed.
This is patently different than sending home an illegal alien from Mexico. That person will not be murdered by his government for fleeing. Cuban refugees are murdered by their government.
This is also a monstrous act of cowardice. Barack Obama is only doing this now, one week before leaving office, because he never has to worry about being held to account by the voters again. He no longer has to worry about trying to help Hillary Clinton win Florida.
He can now reveal himself to be the moral coward and willful idiot of a Communist regime that murders its own people.”
Senators of Cuban heritage like Marco Rubio and Bob Menendez also blasted Obama’s decision.
Politico also reports:
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) was sharply critical, complaining that the Obama administration did not consult Congress.
“We should never deny a Cuban refugee fleeing a brutal regime entry into the United States,” Menendez said in a statement. “The Obama administration seeks to pursue engagement with the Castro regime at the cost of ignoring the present state of torture and oppression, and its systematic curtailment of freedom.”
Sen. Marco Rubio said in a statement: “The Cuban Adjustment Act has provided countless Cubans the opportunity to escape the Castro tyranny. However, in recent years it has also led to growing abuses. While some changes were needed, we must work to ensure that Cubans who arrive here to escape political persecution are not summarily returned to the regime, and they are given a fair opportunity to apply for and receive political asylum.”
Menendez’s criticism is noteworthy because he is a Democrat.
Fortunately, because this was an action taken by the President, Donald Trump can quickly reverse this outrageous decision that will allow a Communist government to murder its own people.
Many are hoping Donald Trump quickly reverses this attack on Cubans seeking freedom.
