Like all the other “experts”, Barack Obama firmly believed Hillary Clinton was going to triumph on election night.

The polls and forecasting models all pegged her victory as a foregone conclusion.

So when the vote came in and Trump emerged victorious, Obama had a surprised reaction.

In an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, Obama revealed his reaction on election night.

He expressed just how surprised he was that Trump won.

The Daily Caller reports:

“Barack Obama said he was genuinely surprised when he realized Donald Trump was going to defeat Hillary Clinton.

Lester Holt asked the president during an interview on Air Force One Tuesday night about his authentic reaction on election night when he realized that the president-elect was going to win.

“Tell me what happened that night, watching those results when you realized that Donald Trump was going to win,” Holt said to Obama. “Was there an unvarnished Barack Obama at that moment?”

“There was just surprise,” Obama replied. “Generally speaking, not just me but my team have been pretty good at seeing something coming and partly just because the polling was so off, the data was off, there was a surprise.”

“You know, I think the president elect would be the first to acknowledge that he didn’t run a conventional campaign. And it’s not clear that he or his team thought they were going to win. So, I think more than anything it was just surprise.”

Even Obama’s political instincts were dulled out by the left-wing media’s echo chamber that created an alternate reality where Hillary was a shoe-in for the White House.

In fact, one study found 91 percent of the coverage Trump received in the weeks leading up to the election was negative.

The press decided Trump needed to be stopped no matter what – even at the cost of their credibility.

In previous campaigns, the so-called “mainstream” media would at least pretend to be objective, even though they’d really just ravage the Republicans.

But in 2016, they dropped even the pretense of objectivity and worked as partisans with press passes.

And it was enough to fool even Obama.

For all of his faults, Obama has always had keen political instincts.

You don’t get to be President without having the highest levels of political intelligence.

But the press coverage and forecasting models were so one-sided that even the cagiest of political operators were tricked into thinking Trump had no chance for victory.

Which could also be seen as a sign of Obama’s fabled arrogance – since he couldn’t see a Trump victory coming.

Obama threw himself into Hillary’s campaign like no other recent out-going President.

He even said a Clinton loss would be a personal insult to his legacy.

Obama once famously told Democrats they would never suffer a midterm loss like the party did in 1994 under Bill Clinton because “you’ve got me.”

But this overconfident mentality may have been what came into play and blocked Obama from sensing that Hillary Clinton could actually lose.
