Locking up the whistleblowers is purely a liberal mindset because whistleblowers forget the enormous power the federal government has over its citizens.
And Eric Snowden might just be the current “face” of anti-federal government whistleblowers for handing over secret NSA files that proved just how powerful the government really is over the people.
Snowden faces two counts of Espionage charges and currently resides in Moscow where Russia granted him asylum.
Liberals view him as a traitor, while the rest view him as a patriot.
So that’s why it was peculiar when President Obama recently commuted the sentence of Bradley Manning.
Manning was a U.S. Army soldier who was convicted by court-martial in July 2013 in violation of the Espionage Act after disclosing nearly a million classified and sensitive military documents to Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks.
He was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison.
And with a little over 7 years into a 35-year sentence, President Obama has commuted the rest.
What Obama just did is a very anti-liberal thing.
Well, just recently, before Obama commuted Manning’s sentence, Julian Assange’s camp announced that “if Obama grants Manning clemency, Assange will agree to U.S. extradition despite clear unconstitutionality of DoJ case.”
So there it is. It’s their revenge against Assange and Russia – the Obama administration undoubtedly think Assange is highly involved with Russia. So, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone.
Remember, the Democratic National Committee, especially, has a very personal vendetta against Assange for releasing their emails during the presidential campaign.
So it’s clear why Obama was ready to call Assange on his bluff and completely undermine a prison sentence – so he could throw him behind bars, right?
Well…… Not so fast.
Bradley Manning became transgender while in prison.
In fact, in a statement the day after his sentencing, Manning said ever since childhood he has felt like a female, and going forward he wanted to be known as ‘Chelsea’. He also desired to begin hormone replacement therapy and switch his gender, which at first was denied.
Needless to say, Manning’s desire for this switch in gender did not bode too well for him. In letters, he wrote about the constant bullying he was receiving from fellow inmates and the prison authorities.
Manning attempted to commit suicide twice since going to prison – once in July of 2016 and the second in October.
He also began a hunger strike in a desperate plea to get what he wanted.
So, on September 13, 2016, the ACLU agreed to do his gender transition surgery if he ended his hunger strike.
Clearly, he was having a rough time in there. It is prison, after all.
Imagine what the streets would look like if every prisoner was granted clemency because they were having a “rough time” in prison?
So, Obama’s seemingly anti-liberal act proved to be actually super-liberal.
Maybe Obama had dual reasoning though. Maybe he thought he could help Chelsea and get Assange.
Although Assange announced he would turn himself in, his lawyer responded to the commuting of Manning’s sentence:
“Mr. Assange welcomes the announcement that Ms. Manning’s sentence will be reduced and she will be released in May, but this is well short of what he sought. Mr. Assange had called for Chelsea Manning to receive clemency and be released immediately.”
