On Tuesday President Trump made a shocking move. He chose to remove Rex Tillerson from his position as Secretary of State, and is now replacing him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Below is the tweet President Trump sent regarding the issue:

Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!

In addition, according to Trump Gina Haspel (who was serving as Pompeo’s deputy) will become the new Director of the CIA. She will be the first woman to serve in this role.
According to a statement from President Trump, Pompeo has quite the reputation. After graduating first in his class at West Point, he chose to valiantly serve our country in the U.S. Army. From there, he went on to graduate with honors from Harvard Law School. Since then, Pompeo has been serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Trump also said that Gina Haspel’s becoming the first-ever female Director of the CIA is a “historic milestone.” In addition, Pompeo and Haspel have been working together for over a year now, and have, as Trump says, a “great mutual respect” for one another.
In regards to Tillerson’s removal, Trump didn’t go into detail. In a statement the president simply made a commendation to the former director, saying that “much has been accomplished” over the past year or so, and that he wishes Tillerson and his family well.
