LUNCH-articleLargeKids abandoning school lunch program, food waste piles up, in wake of White House controls

The liberal campaign to make “food waste” an issue is running into a big problem.

Michelle Obama’s controls on school lunches.

As the White House centralizes control of what American children eat, and replaces their meals with paltry servings of tasteless mush, kids are ditching the federal school lunch program and leaving school garbage cans teetering with piles of wasted food.

Even with the economy stagnating and food stamp enrollment exploding, the sheer awfulness of Obamalunches is doing what Republicans can’t – convincing young people to give up free stuff.

“Nationwide, participation in the National School Lunch Program declined by 1.4 million children (or 4.5 percent) from school year 2010-2011 through school year 2013-2014, to 30.4 million children,” the United States Government Accountability Office reveals in a new report.

Not only are fewer kids signing up for Obamalunches, more and more kids already in the program are refusing their government-mandated meals.

“The participation rate of enrolled students also declined, from 62 to 58 percent,” the GAO reports.

School officials directly blame the Obama White House.

“Officials from seven of the eight states we interviewed in school year 2014-2015 reported that the decreases in lunch participation were influenced by student acceptance of the changes made to comply with the new lunch content and nutrition standards,” the GAO says.

And of the declining number of students taking Obamalunches, more and more are just tossing them in the trash.

“Five of eight SFAs (School Food Authorities) described continuing challenges with plate waste, that is, students taking required foods and then not eating them,” the GAO reports.

That’s doubly ironic, because “food waste” is the latest liberal cause du jour, with some leftist cities actually punishing and fining citizens who throw away uneaten food.

In fact, the leader of the anti-food waste movement is the Obama White House itself.

“The United States enjoys the most productive and abundant food supply on earth, but too much of this food goes to waste,” said Obama Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in unveiling a federal anti-food waste campaign announced just weeks ago.

“Experts have projected that reducing food losses by just 15 percent would provide enough food for more than 25 million Americans every year, helping to sharply reduce incidences of food insecurity for millions,” the Obama USDA announced in.

They can start by repealing their own deeply unpopular Obamalunch mandates.
