After eight years of doing everything they could to ban guns, suddenly, liberals are rushing en masse to gun stores and stocking up.
Ironically, it appears liberals are afraid the federal government will become tyrannical, and they see private gun ownership as their only means of defense.
What does this mean for the gun rights movement, and should we be happy liberals have, at least temporarily, learned the reason for the Second Amendment?
A new BBC report has uncovered this phenomenon.
They found “Clara,” a transgendered 28-year-old nursing student and ardent liberal.
“I really didn’t expect to be thinking about purchasing a gun. It was something that my father did and I rolled my eyes at him,” she says.
But now she’s going to the range every week and looking to buy a gun to defend herself from the neo-Nazis she thinks Trump will unleash to attack her.
“ I’ve been seeing the way that Trump’s election has mobilized a lot of the far right and given them hope,” Clara tells BBC.
She tells BBC she knows transgendered people living in rural areas “who woke up and found a bunch of swastikas and words like ‘faggot’ and ‘trannie’ scrawled all over their building.”
While her reasons may not match reality, Clara does seem to understand what private gun ownership means.
“Me not engaging or being prepared to defend my friends by force… isn’t going to stop people from being attacked or harassed,” Clara says.
In fact, after years of mocking Americans who cited government tyranny as the basis for private gun ownership, liberals are now flooding gun stores to defend themselves from what they fear will be a tyrannical government.
“Gun store owners told NBC News that since November 8 they’re seeing up to four times as many black and minority customers — and black gun groups are reporting double the normal number of attendees at their meetings since the election,” NBC News reported.
“Michael Cargill, the owner of Central Texas Gun Works in Austin, told NBC News he had given up on advertising to African-Americans — but now he’s seeing as many as 20 a month, and they’re filling up his training classes; along with Muslim, Hispanic, and LGBT patrons with heightened worries about being targeted,” NBC News reported.
Yes, it’s not just racial minorities who are suddenly learning about the Second Amendment.
“There are people who have professed to carrying a gun now because Trump made them feel unsafe,” Gwendolyn Patton of the Pink Pistols, a gun rights group for gays, tells the BBC.
Not only are liberals discovering the reason to own a gun, they’re also learning gun owners aren’t the evil ogres the liberal elites have made them out to be.
Patton tells the BBC many of their new gay and lesbian members feared being “harassed by the gun nuts at the range” only to find they are “welcomed with open arms by the shooting community.”
Will liberals still believe in private gun ownership as a bulwark against government tyranny after Trump is gone?
There’s no better time than now to start that conversation.
