Barack Obama loyalists buried within the government have been accused of leaking classified intelligence to the press.

Some have referred to them as Obama’s “shadow government”.

And now one Congressman is calling for an investigation that could bring Obama’s shadow government down for good.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes sent a letter to the FBI asking the Bureau to investigate the leaks of classified intelligence that members of the press used to attack the Trump administration.

Politico reports:

“House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes on Friday sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation asking it to investigate the leaks of classified information that have produced a series of damaging media reports on President Donald Trump’s administration, according to three sources familiar with the letter.

Nunes has suggested in recent days that the leaks came from career government intelligence employees who are either loyal to former President Barack Obama or opposed to Trump. And Nunes’ letter gives Trump a key Capitol Hill bulkhead in his war on leaks.

According to the sources familiar with Nunes’ letter, it asks FBI Director James Comey to investigate and report back to the intelligence committee on the circumstances behind the leaking of details from Trump’s phone calls with foreign leaders, as well as from communications between his former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn and the Russian Ambassador to the U.S.

Nunes’s letter also asks Comey to look into leaks related to the Central Intelligence Agency’s rejection of an elite-level security clearance for one of Flynn’s closest deputies on the National Security Council, senior director for Africa Robin Townley.

It’s unclear if Nunes’s letter asks the FBI to investigate other leaks as well, and the California congressman’s office did not comment. Neither did Townley, the FBI or the CIA.”

Trump’s opponents in the government and the media have used several leaks to try and throw his administration off stride.

At first they created public relations embarrassments when details of his conversations with foreign leaders were leaked to the press.

These leaks contained cherry-picked details of the conversations in order to paint Trump as unhinged and damaging to American diplomacy,

But while the leaks didn’t represent the true nature of the calls, they did force the Trump administration to waste valuable time putting out fires.

More seriously, the leaks that led to the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn held classified information.

These leaks also revealed Flynn’s calls to the Russian Ambassador were intercepted and may have been obtained without a warrant.

As an American citizen, Flynn’s communications were protected by the Fourth Amendment.

The government would have needed to obtain a warrant to collect his calls.

It’s not clear that was done in this case.

A criminal investigation into the source of these leaks could lead to charges.

Many believe former Obama officials are behind the leak campaign.

An investigation to root out the leakers and charge them would most likely end the ability of Obama’s shadow government to attack Trump – for good.
