Did the Trump campaign collude with the Russians in hacking the email accounts of prominent Democrats during the 2016 election?
Democrats and members of the media have lobbed allegations without evidence for months.
But now, one top former member of the intelligence community has finally given the definitive answer on the subject.
Barack Obama’s former Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, was interviewed on Meet the Press about Trump’s claims that Obama wire-tapped the Trump Tower.
In the course of the interview, host Chuck Todd asked Clapper about the claims that Trump campaign officials had colluded with Russia on the email hacking.
Clapper flatly stated there was no evidence such collusion occurred.
The transcript of the exchange was obtained from NBC’s website:
Well, that’s an important revelation at this point. Let me ask you this. Does intelligence exist that can definitively answer the following question, whether there were improper contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials?
We did not include any evidence in our report, and I say, “our,” that’s N.S.A., F.B.I. and C.I.A., with my office, the Director of National Intelligence, that had anything, that had any reflection of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians. There was no evidence of that included in our report.
I understand that. But does it exist?
Not to my knowledge.
If it existed, it would have been in this report?
This could have unfolded or become available in the time since I left the government.
But at the time, we had no evidence of such collusion.
When Oregon’s Democrat Senator, Ron Wyden, was asked about Clapper’s statement, he too said they had not seen any proof that the Trump team had colluded with Russia.

The case against the Trump campaign having colluded with the Russians is collapsing.
For the first time since these allegations first surfaced, a former Obama official has been forced to go on the record and categorically deny that any evidence exists proving Trump associates worked with the Russians.
Trump has always claimed this story to be fake news.
He appears to be right.
