Top rated Fox News host Bill O’Reilly is under furious assault from the left-wing media and special interest groups.
Outlets like the New York Times and CNN are committed to using his personal failings to drive him off the air.
Now Fox News is set to make a major decision about O’Reilly’s future.
O’Reilly has not appeared on the air since April 11th.
He is on a scheduled vacation in Italy until April 24th.
But he may never appear on Fox News again.
Media outlets like CNN began calling sponsors whose advertisements were aired on the O’Reilly Factor after allegations about Fox News settling sexual harassment complaints surfaced in a New York Times report.
90 sponsors pulled their ads – although they just moved them to other Fox programs.
Many wondered if O’Reilly could survive the attack.
Now there are reports his career at Fox News may be over.
The Wall Street Journal – which like Fox News, is owned by Rupert Murdoch – reports:
“Fox News is preparing to cut ties with star anchor Bill O’Reilly, according to people close to the situation, after revelations that he and Fox parent 21st Century Fox settled multiple sexual harassment complaints led to an exodus of advertisers from his show and mounting pressure on the network.
A final resolution on the fate of Mr. O’Reilly, host of the “The O’Reilly Factor,” could come as early as the next several days, the people said.
21st Century Fox, which will hold a board meeting Thursday, hasn’t finalized an exit agreement with Mr. O’Reilly, the people close to the situation said.”
O’Reilly’s lawyer responded that he is the victim of McCarthyism and smears by radical left-wing groups like Media Matters.
The Wall Street Journal also reports:
“Mr. O’Reilly has denied any wrongdoing, saying he paid settlements to “put to rest any controversies to spare my children.”
On Tuesday, an attorney for Mr. O’Reilly said the host has “been subjected to a brutal campaign of character assassination that is unprecedented in post-McCarthyist America” and added that he has “evidence that the smear campaign is being orchestrated by far-left organizations bent on destroying O’Reilly and Fox News for political and financial reasons.”
O’Reilly’s show is routinely the highest rated show on cable TV and his ratings only increased during the controversy.
But as a warning sign for Fox News, ratings for The Factor have been down 25 percent since O’Reilly has been on vacation and a slew of guest hosts have filled in.
Some critics believe these guest hosts are auditioning for the permanent 8pm hosting gig on Fox News.
