Donald Trump made immigration the signature issue of his campaign.
His call to crack down on illegal immigration and end sanctuary cities powered his outsider campaign to victory in the Republican primary and the general election.
Now Trump’s taking one major step that could end sanctuary cities in America for good.
During the campaign, Trump often had “Angel Moms” – mother’s whose children were murdered by illegal immigrants – at his rallies.
Their presence was a signal that Trump would never forget about the issue.
And it was clear that Trump was personally touched by their stories and the tragedy they had to suffer.
He made it clear he would never forget them or their loss.
So Trump supporters were thrilled when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that sanctuary cities which defy federal immigration law would be stripped of federal funds.
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he is cracking down on sanctuary cities; cutting billions of dollars in law enforcement grants.
The Department of Justice will hand out $4 billion in federal law enforcement grants over the balance of this fiscal year which ends in September. Sessions told reporters at the White House he will be working to prevent any of it from going to sanctuary jurisdictions, The Washington Times reported.
“Countless Americans would be alive today … if these policies of sanctuary cities were ended,” General Sessions told reporters. The AG stated he is using a tactic that began under AG Loretta Lynch.
Not only can the Attorney General withhold grants from this year’s funding requests, the DOJ can actually claw back grants made in prior years to jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with immigration officials, U.S. Representative John Culberson (R-TX) told Breitbart Texas.”
Mayors of sanctuary cities were outraged.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti vowed to fight the order.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports on the money Los Angeles stands to lose:
“Among the Justice Department grants received by the city of Los Angeles in recent years include $1.8 million from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which goes to the city’s initiative for reducing criminal gang activity.
The city also was awarded $1 million last year from the Justice Department to be put toward a $69 million program to equip all police officers in the field with body cameras.”
Critics of sanctuary cities argue they are a magnet for illegal immigration, and if cities flout federal immigration law, then they should face consequences.
Some Trump critics wondered if he was all talk on immigration.
Republicans have seen candidates talk tough on illegal immigration as candidates, only to succumb to the pressures placed on them by the open borders crowd once in office.
But Trump’s actions so far have largely been consistent with his rhetoric.
Supporters are thrilled to see he is enacting the policies he promised on the campaign trail.
And this big announcement to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities is just another promise Trump is keeping to his supporters.
Will this move end sanctuary cities for good?
