The media and the Democrats think they have Donald Trump trapped.

They believe he is caught up in scandal.

But the facts tell a different story.

Democrats and their allies in the media were aghast when Trump sided with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who said Russia was not the source of the hacked emails turned over to the privacy group.

Trump has repeatedly questioned the idea that the Russians were behind hacking the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

It was anonymous sources that leaked this idea to media outlets, but so far no one has offered any proof to back these unsubstantiated claims.

Trump tweeted his skepticism about the merits of the case.

Assange maintains that his source was not a state.

And now, new questions have been raised about the validity of the Russians being behind the hackings.

New reports indicate that neither the FBI – nor any other federal agency – has examined the Democrat National Committee’s servers for evidence.

They were searched was by a third party vendor with the government just accepting their claim.

Buzzfeed reports:

“The FBI did not examine the servers of the Democratic National Committee before issuing a report attributing the sweeping cyberintrusion to Russia-backed hackers, BuzzFeed News has learned.

Six months after the FBI first said it was investigating the hack of the Democratic National Committee’s computer network, the bureau has still not requested access to the hacked servers, a DNC spokesman said. No US government entity has run an independent forensic analysis on the system, one US intelligence official told BuzzFeed News.

“The DNC had several meetings with representatives of the FBI’s Cyber Division and its Washington (DC) Field Office, the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, and U.S. Attorney’s Offices, and it responded to a variety of requests for cooperation, but the FBI never requested access to the DNC’s computer servers,” Eric Walker, the DNC’s deputy communications director, told BuzzFeed News in an email.”

The examination was done by a company called CrowdStrike and determined Russian-linked hackers infiltrated the DNC’s servers.

However, this was a stunning move by the FBI.

Buzzfeed reports cyber security experts had told them the FBI does their own forensic work:

“It’s unclear why the FBI didn’t request access to the DNC servers, and whether it’s common practice when the bureau investigates the cyberattacks against private entities by state actors, like when the Sony Corporation was hacked by North Korea in 2014.

BuzzFeed News spoke to three cybersecurity companies who have worked on major breaches in the last 15 months, who said that it was “par for the course” for the FBI to do their own forensic research into the hacks. None wanted to comment on the record on another cybersecurity company’s work, or the work being done by a national security agency.”

Donald Trump is set to be briefed on this matter by intelligence officials.

But he has cited past intelligence failures such as the false claim Iraq had weapons of mass destruction as to why he is hesitant to accept the intelligence community’s word.

Trump – as well as many Americans – believes these leaks are politically motivated to undermine the legitimacy of his victory.

The lack of proof – and now this new information that the FBI never examined the DNC’s servers – is only adding fuel to the fire.

It’s far from Trump being the one caught up in scandal and controversy.

The true scandal may be the politicization of our intelligence community.
