More and more countries have begun to enact mirrored versions of Donald Trump’s pause on immigrant and refugee intake.

Countries in Europe are finally closing their borders after experiencing much turmoil and destruction in result of terrorist activity from refugees.

And America’s closest neighbor, Canada, is taking a good look at their refugee program now as well.

Due to the United States current pause in immigration, Canada has become the alternative destination for refugees unable to gain access into the U.S.

But Canada – who up until to this point welcomed refugees with open arms – is now overflowing with refugees seeking asylum.

And many are being turned away.

The Daily Caller reports:

Refugees who initially planned to settle in the United States are now reportedly making the trek up north to Canada. The current laws on the books, however, mean that these refugees will more than likely not be able to live legally in America’s northern neighbor.

Essentially, Canada and the United States have an agreement put in place regarding refugees, which only complicates the matter.

The Daily Caller reports:

The Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the U.S. came into effect in 2004. This meant that a refugee who first arrives in the U.S. can’t claim asylum in Canada, and visa versa.

There is a loophole, however.

The Daily Caller reports:

The Montreal Gazette also reports that a loophole in the agreement allows for refugees to apply for asylum as long as they cross illegally into the interior of the country. However as Canadian Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen has said, he has no plans to increase his country’s refugee intake, these refugees crossing illegally are doubtful to get asylum.

As a result of the loophole, many refugees are attempting to cross into the country illegally, furthering legal complications and hardships in Canada.

The matter of whether or not to welcome refugees in Canada has become a political disaster at best.

The Montreal Gazette reported that Canadian liberals are calling for the suspension of the “Safe Third Country Agreement” in order to allow refugees into the country.

However, many are in full support of pausing refugee acceptance and asylum for immigrants in the country.

The bottom line is Canada is becoming overrun with refugees.  And there are only so many refugees a country can accept before its own well-being is threatened.

The Daily Caller reports:

The nation only plans to support 7,500 refugees and an additional 16,000 have to be privately sponsored. This has led to a fight by Canadian liberals to get Prime Minister Trudeau to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement.

The fate of the agreement is not known as of yet. However, the Prime Minister is set to meet with President Trump to discuss the matter soon.

The Daily Caller reports:

Prime Minister Trudeau has said he is “very concerned” about asylum seekers making dangerous voyages to reach his nation, but has not commented on whether he will suspend the current agreement with the U.S. Trudeau is scheduled to meet with President Trump on Monday.

Do you think Canada should install a pause in their immigration and refugee acceptance?
