Donald Trump’s first five months in office have been marked by illegal leaks designed to cripple his Presidency.

Leakers have planted fake news stories in the press, and created feeding frenzies that have frozen Trump’s ability to pass his agenda.

But the tables just got turned — and the Deep State never saw it coming.

The most explosive allegation leaked to the press was that special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating Trump for obstruction of justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey.

The Washington Post reports:

The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.

The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.

Journalists were elated.

They thought they finally had the silver bullet to take Trump down.

The only problem was the story wasn’t true.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Special counsel Robert Mueller hasn’t decided whether to investigate President Trump as part of the Russia probe, according to a report on Sunday.

“Now, my sources are telling me he’s begun some preliminary planning,” Pierre Thomas, the ABC News senior justice correspondent, said of Mueller on ABC’s “This Week.” “Plans to talk to some people in the administration. But he’s not yet made that momentous decision to go for a full-scale investigation.”

Last week, the Washington Post reported Mueller is investigating the president for obstruction of justice in light of his firing of former FBI Director James Comey, something the president’s legal team is denying.

“Now Mueller faces a huge decision,” Thomas said. “Does he believe the president, who says there’s no wrongdoing here, or does he go after the president in the way James Comey wants him to do?”

Trump attorney Jay Sekulow also denied that the President was under investigation.

The Washington Examiner also reports:

But attorney Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump’s legal team, insisted Sunday the president was not literally confirming the investigation but was just referring to the story.

“Let me be clear: the president is not under investigation as James Comey stated in his testimony, that the president was not the target of investigation on three different occasions,” Sekulow said Sunday. “The president is not a subject or target of an investigation.”

When the Post story broke, it was framed in such a way as to make Americans believe Trump was a felon.

It ricocheted across the media landscape.

But the story was quickly debunked.

The aggressive pushback marks a new phase of the Deep State’s war on Trump.

Previously, the administration sat back and absorbed each blow without doing much in the way of defending themselves.

That appears to have changed, and now this battle will be fought on equal footing.
