The Democrats have been sucked into a debate over Civil War memorials ever since the tragedy in Charlottesville.

Nancy Pelosi is now leading the charge to remove Confederate statues from the U.S. capitol.

But the skeletons in her closet have set the Democrats up to walk into a trap that could finish them for good.

After Heather Heyer was killed when a white supremacist allegedly ran his car into a crowd of protesters, Democrats seized on the moment to appease their radical, identity politics base and tear down statues honoring Confederate generals from public view.

That included statues honoring the Confederacy that reside in the U.S. Capitol.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi quickly jumped at the chance to support legislation proposed by New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker to remove the statues from the Capitol.

Town hall reports:

“Last week House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi demanded Speaker Paul Ryan remove all confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol. In a statement, Pelosi said the statues have “always been reprehensible” and insisted they be taken down, despite the Capitol acting as a museum for all kinds of American history.

“The halls of Congress are the very heart of our democracy.  The statues in the Capitol should embody our highest ideals as Americans, expressing who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation,” Pelosi said. “The Confederate statues in the halls of Congress have always been reprehensible.  If Republicans are serious about rejecting white supremacy, I call upon Speaker Ryan to join Democrats to remove the Confederate statues from the Capitol immediately.”

“Under the leadership of Democrats in Congress, we have recognized more women and people of color in Congress’s collection of statues, including Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth and Helen Keller.  As Speaker, we relocated Robert E. Lee out of a place of honor in National Statuary Hall – a place now occupied by the statue of Rosa Parks,” she continued. “There is no room for celebrating the violent bigotry of the men of the Confederacy in the hallowed halls of the United States Capitol or in places of honor across the country.”

But the Democrats have a big problem.

The American people overwhelmingly agree with Donald Trump that the statues should remain as historical monuments.

A Marist poll found that Americans supported leaving the statues up by a 35-point margin, at 62-27 percent.

There is also one other problem.

When Pelosi was Speaker of the House, she never lifted a finger to remove these statues.

If they were symbols of racism and white supremacy, why did she tolerate their presence?

This looks to be a losing fight for Democrats.

It’s a fringe position they are being dragged into highlighting because their radical base demands they do so.

What are your thoughts?

Will the Democrats regret this decision?
