25749129_sThe ever long arm of the government is growing longer and longer.

Ever since Obama arrived in office in 2008 we’ve known he was going to try and restrict gun rights. And though he’s been blocked by Republicans in congress he hasn’t let up.

His newest plan is to restrict seniors who receive social security from getting a gun if they’re deemed mentally unfit to handle their own finances.

This would affect millions of Americans who have their finances handled by another person or fiduciary.

The reasoning behind this as Obama has stated, is if a person isn’t in a position to collect their social security without assistance then they aren’t eligible to exercise their second amendment rights.

That’s an odd conclusion to come to.

The LA Times reports,

The push is intended to bring the Social Security Administration in line with laws regulating who gets reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, which is used to prevent gun sales to felons, drug addicts, immigrants in the country illegally and others.

A potentially large group within Social Security are people who, in the language of federal gun laws, are unable to manage their own affairs due to “marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease.”

Here’s the irony in all of this. Just this past month we’ve seen just how incompetent the NICS has been in working to reduce gun violence.

Just the other week it was revealed the shooter in the Charleston shooting incident managed to get a gun legally, even though after going an NICS background check he should have been refused.

In regards to this new law, the complications that appear is how exactly is the federal government going to determine who is “unfit” to own a gun?

Additionally this new law will essentially eliminate gun ownership for people who can’t handle their finances in accordance with the government’s specifications.

But just because someone has trouble handling their finances without help mean they shouldn’t own a weapon in order to help protect themselves

If anything these are the exact people who should be able to own a gun as they’re likely to be preyed upon by criminals because of their advanced age.

“Someone can be incapable of managing their funds but not be dangerous, violent or unsafe,” said Dr. Marc Rosen, a Yale psychiatrist who has studied how veterans with mental health problems manage their money. “They are very different determinations.”

It’s an offensive affront to personal liberty and Obama should be ashamed to even consider doing this to people who have paid their dues and are simply trying to live their lives as they see fit.
